Who is Martin Luther King Jr.?
I know that there is Martin Luther, the German priest who started the Christian Reformation, but Martin Luther King Jr. He’s another personality that also made a difference, an impact on the world, especially in the USA.
He was a Baptist minister, and activist, born on January 15, 1929. He has helped people by leading the movement for civil rights in America. He was assassinated in 1968.
He led the civil rights movement for people of color in the United States, but he is advocating nonviolence and civil disobedience.
He was a son of an African American church leader, Martin Luther King Sr.
The things he participated in and led marches for are:
- Right to vote
- Desegregation
- Labor rights
And many other civil rights.
He won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for combating racial inequality through nonviolent resistance.
His speeches are highly quotable today. His legacy lives on, as so much he has done for the country of the USA, and for the world, fighting against discrimination, poverty, capitalism, and even the focus opposition towards the Vietnam war.
King was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and the Congressional Gold Medal in 2003. Martin Luther King Jr. Day was established as a holiday in cities and states throughout the United States beginning in 1971; the holiday was enacted at the federal level by legislation signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986. Hundreds of streets in the U.S. have been renamed in his honor, and the most populous county in Washington State was rededicated for him. The Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., was dedicated in 2011.
What’s in it for me?
MLKDAY, although not everyone’s American, but Martin Luther King Jr. was a great man, a leader, and an inspiration to many. His story will live on, and he is part of history. He is one of the people that has made a difference.

We all aim to make a difference in this world, to live a happy and enjoyable life, and to inspire others. As a thank you to the good people of the past, we are to celebrate their achievements, and the things that they fought for, remember them, bringing their legacy to everyone’s heart.
What is the importance of this day?
MLKDay is a federal holiday in the United States marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. It is observed on the third Monday of January each year. Born in 1929, King’s actual birthday is January 15 (which in 1929 fell on a Tuesday). The holiday is similar to holidays set under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The earliest Monday for this holiday is January 15 and the latest is January 21.
For the remarkable things he’s done for many, the oppressed and discriminated, and unjustly died, Martin Luther King Jr. has been an integral part of freeing them. So today is to commemorate and honor his good works. It’s a form of respect for good people that paved the way for a generation that’s freer and more accepting.
