In this blog, we’ll take you behind the scenes at PlayfulSparks to share our process for producing high-quality, engaging animated videos. From screenwriting to post-production, we’ll break down each step of the process and explain how we bring stories to life with colorful, fun animation.

behind the scenes

Behind the scenes: Getting Started

  1. Screenwriting: The first step in our process is helping our clients write their story, or if they already have a script, we’ll review it and offer feedback to ensure the story is clear and engaging for the target audience. Our team of experienced writers can help craft stories that captivate and entertain children and families alike.
  2. Storyboard: Once the script is finalized, we’ll move on to storyboarding. Storyboarding is the process of visualizing the story through a series of sketches. It helps us to plan out the sequence of events, timing, and camera angles for each scene. Our artists use their creativity and expertise to transform the script into a detailed visual representation of the story.
  3. Voice Overs: Before we can begin animating, we need to have the voice-overs recorded. Clients can source their own voice actors or we can provide this service in-house. Voice-overs are an important part of the animation process because they help to establish the timing and pace of the animation.
  4. Animatics: If the sketched storyboard is not enough to fully visualize the story, we’ll create animatics. Animatics are rough sketches of the scenes that include the voice-overs and timing. This allows us to make sure the pacing is correct and the story is clear before we start animating.

2D Animation Process

  1. Character Design and Illustration: Before we start animating, we need to create the characters that will be featured in the animation. Our team of talented illustrators designs and illustrates the characters based on the client’s requirements. Once the design is approved, we prepare the characters for rigging by separating the body parts and arranging them into layers.
  2. Background and Props Creation: The next step is to create the background and props that will be used in the animation. Our team of artists creates the scenery and props, ensuring that they match the client’s specifications.
  3. 2D Animation/Production: Once the characters, backgrounds, and props are ready, we start animating the scenes using Adobe Creative Cloud software, including Adobe Character Animator, After Effects, Photoshop, Illustrator and Premiere Pro. We work on each scene and animate the characters’ movements, as well as any props that need to be animated.
  4. Sound Design: Once the animation is complete, we add sound effects, voiceovers, and music to the animation to bring it to life.
  5. Post Production: In post-production, we finalize the animation by adding filters, colors, special effects, transitions, text, and cutting the scenes appropriately. This process also involves adding the final music and mixing the sound to make sure that everything is in sync.

3D Animation Process

  1. Character Design and Modeling: For 3D animations, we first sketch the character and then model them on software such as Autodesk Maya or Blender. The model is created in 3D space, and we can view it from any angle.
  2. Background Design and Props Modeling: The next step is to create the background and props that will be used in the animation. Our team of artists creates the scenery and props, ensuring that they match the client’s specifications.
  3. Character/Figure Rigging: In this phase, we add skeletons to the characters and rig their body parts or set up the props for animation.
  4. Animation: We create body animations and camera animations using software such as Autodesk Maya or Blender. We animate the characters’ movements and camera angles to make the animation come to life.
  5. 3D Lighting and Rendering Once the animation is complete, we add lights to the scene to create the desired mood and atmosphere. We then render the scenes, which means that we convert the 3D model into a video format.
  6. Sound Design and Post Production After rendering the scenes, we add sound effects, voiceovers, and music to the animation. We then finalize the animation by adding filters, colors, special effects, transitions, text, and cutting the scenes appropriately. This process also involves adding the final music and mixing the sound to make sure that everything is in sync.
